Bahrain on the brink

Trying to follow the events in Bahrain on twitter this weekend has been distressing and confusing. Hastily filmed and posted YouTube clips combine with first hand testimony; like this example from angryarabiya, “I personally have had a weapon pointed at me twice for trying to film. If they arn't committing crimes y r they so afraid of being.”

And tonight the Foreign Office has changed its travel advice for those going to Bahrain,

“This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to the Travel Summary and the Safety and Security - Political Situation section (reports that the Saudi National Guard will enter Bahrain). The overall level of the advice has changed; we advise against all travel to Bahrain.”

The situation in the island kingdom is becoming increasing dangerous.

The regime has employed Pakistani security contractors, and the protestors are accusing them of being heavy handed: and complain the police of doing nothing to stop them; or the pro-government vigilantes armed with swords and clubs.

Others point to the state broadcaster as stoking the violence, and inflaming religious and sectarian hatred.

The UN Human Rights Council put the Bahrain authorities on notice on Saturday, in a statement that also warned Saudi Arabia.

With Saudi Arabia posed to commit forces, the UN will be faced with another severe test thrown up by this Arab Spring.
